It’s about a group of patients living in or around the delightful village of Pulham Market in South Norfolk. I was a Practice Nurse at Pulham Surgery for 27 years, from 1980, and in 1994, one or two patients approached me because they wanted to offer their help. They kept hearing of friends and neighbours who had become unwell, lonely and vulnerable and who had extreme difficulty finding the assistance they needed. The patients wanted to make a difference to this situation and so the Pulham Surgery Support Group was born. The doctors and nurses could then refer patients in need to the group, as well as directing anybody who wanted to help, to become a volunteer .. and the rest is history.
For years we have been inviting speakers to tell us how and where to get help. When in doubt we ask the experts. The spin off is that we keep finding more that we can do to help ourselves and that when we remain positive, it's infectious and we all feel much better! How good is that?
My mission then is to find out what works. Where are the resources? Who can help? How can we promote our own health, as well as that of our friends and family?
